Snowmen Drawings Grade 3
One of the third grade classes was working at a faster pace than the others because of holidays that caused the other classes to miss art. As a result I needed a filler lesson, so I taught them how to make snowmen that looked more realistic by rendering the shading with colored pencils. We talked about how light hits an object and had student volunteers stand in front of the class to demonstrate cast shadows. All that is needed for this quick and easy lesson is dark blue construction paper cut to about 4 x 6", and white, black, red and orange colored pencils. Students benefited from getting to attempt 3D rendering multiple times so have plenty of paper cut and ready to go. Remember to emphasize shading around the shape of the snowmen to create spheres rather than flat circles.
