Expressionist Paintings - Grade 5

This week's fifth grade lesson introduces students to the brief, but impactful Expressionist art movement. Students participate in an art history discussion, create art inspired by the artists they have studied and support each other through peer critique and self-assessment. Find the lesson here:

Grade 4 Faith Ringgold Inspired Quilt Squares Lessons

Teacher Tuesdays: Ringgold. I originally designed this lesson when I was volunteering at a church Sunday school program because the classes were learning about the theme "Love Thy Neighbor" and I thought a neighborhood quilt would be a good idea. Years later when I was in my own art classroom I updated the lesson with a greater art history approach and expanded on the use of narrative in art. Grade 3 - Fiber Art Embroidery Lesson

I remember learning to sew and embroider at a very young age, stitching gifts for my grandmother or dresses for my dolls. This valuable skill can be taught in an artful way and I find that almost all students enjoy sewing, even those who struggle at first. I start teaching simple sewing early on so that by third grade my students can master the embroidery stitches used in this art project. Find the lesson here: Embroidery Lesson
